Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt #1 (Dynamite): While I adore this cover, I'm not 100% sold on the interior art as everyone else seems to be, yet the inter-textual meta-commentary in the writing positions this as the unofficial sequel to Watchmen that you never asked for, which is quite fun.

The Wild Storm #19 (DC): Warren Ellis lays out an entire revised origin of The Wildstorm Universe as only Uncle Warren can, Stormwatch, The Authority, and WildCats all tied in cohesively, with perfectly complementary art by John Davis-Hunt for an alt-capes epic.

Deadly Class #36 (Image): There are few books on the stands that are as visually distinct as this run, with inventive small-scale panel layouts, emotional weight to the characters, and a somber color palette thanks to the art of Wes Craig and colors of Jordan Boyd.

Green Lantern #3 (DC): There was tough competition this week with the non-stop thrill ride and clever design work of Cemetery Beach #5 (Image) by Warren Ellis and Jason Howard, as well as the sheer brilliance of the hook and meta commentary surrounding genre and craft in Die #2 (Image) by Kieron Gillen and Stephanie Hans, but I have to give it to Grant Morrison and Liam Sharp for the manic sci-fi extravaganza and confectionary excess packed into the art of Green Lantern #3, reminiscent of the Len Wein and Dave Gibbons stories I grew up on.

Wolverine: The Long Night #1 (Marvel): I’ve been a fan of Benjamin Percy ever since he wrote a short stint on Detective Comics with artist John Paul Leon, and here he’s able to use a smart framing device to capture a somber ominous tone that’s perfect for Logan, while barely even showing the character on-panel.
